Home Server Update
I began the process of starting my own home server. For hardware, I am using an older HP Notebook 15. I started out by putting clean Windows 10 OS back on it to clear up some resources. I ultimately decided to go with Ubuntu Server for resources purposes. It is also command line based, and I don't have any experience with it. I thought it would be a great chance to learn. For storage, I have an older 8TB Xbox game drive that I formatted. During the installation of Ubuntu server, I chose the wrong storage location, and the OS was installed on the external drive rather than the internal storage. So I had to start over with a new installation of the OS. I still have yet to reformat the game drive, so I will need to get that fixed before going too much further. In addition to Ubuntu server, I also chose a desktop hub called CasaOS. It was very easy to install, and it works great. I simply search my IP address and the hub is there. I still have a long way to go before this setup is complete, but I am very much enjoying this process. I am also looking at ways to improve hardware moving forward. I'd like the ability to run some virtual machines eventually, but this current laptop does not have the RAM for that. Currently, I mostly plan on using this setup as network storage for photos and videos. I would also like to eventually make my own media server.
