Week 9 Posting - Upgrading RAM
During this week’s written assignment, I got the chance to take a deeper look inside one of my personal laptops. It allowed me to think about an issue I’ve been having for a while. The HP Pavilion x360 is a laptop that I’ve had for several years. I currently use a MacBook Pro for all of my day-to-day and schoolwork, but I dug my Pavilion out a few months ago to start messing around with it again. After not using it since around 2022, I had several updates that needed to be installed. After all of these updates, I had an issue with with memory usage. An anti-malware service executable along with Steam are taking up about 90% of the usable memory on the laptop. I have looked into ways to solve this issue in the set up that I have by tweaking settings, but nothing seems to be working as of yet. I’ve decided to change tactics. During this week’s project, I was able to look inside of my laptop in order to see theoretically replace a few parts for a scenario. I found that I only had one stick of RAM on my laptop, but I have two slots available. The RAM I have installed is a 4 GB DDR4. Under my settings it says I only have about 3.82 GB available. To solve my issues, I am planning on purchasing a stick of 8 GB RAM to expand the memory I have available. The stick of 8 GB ram only cost around $19 which is a great price to expand the memory and hopefully add some usability back to my laptop. While looking into the RAM, I realized I had an older HP Notebook in my garage. I figured that since my current laptop had about 4 GB of RAM that, the older Notebook would also have about the same. I ran out to the garage and dug it out. It did have 4 GB of RAM, but, unfortunately, the RAM on that laptop was DDR3. So it looks like I will be going to purchase the stick of ram from Crucial to install, but it might be a week or two before I can get it. Although there are several tutorials for this on the Internet already, I am thinking about making a video of my own during the upgrade process. I am not sure whether I will make it public, but I will at least post it here.
